Smoky Mountains Summer Vacation

The lure of endless American highways got the better of me. It took hours and hours of dish washing and lawn mowing to convince my better half, Latha to accompany me on the 4000 kms road trip, this time to The Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee. We took the circuitous route stopping at Niagara Falls to admire the Falls then at Pittsburgh to worship the God, Columbus for job and Cincinnati for window shopping at Gemini Jewelers.

Niagara falls was, is and will always be amazing any time of the day, month or year. I went on the newest attraction Skywheel to satisfy the child in everyone of us.

It was not even a week and we both craved for some dosai, sambar and chutney. Omnipotent and omnipresent Google God helped us find where we had nice South Indian Vegan food, very bland, not spicy at all. Gulab Jamoon in hot syrup was the best item in the buffet.

Cincinnati also has a beautiful Hindu temple, called Devdham of North America

Latha was not happy with the choice of hotel near the Ohio riverfront. Ohio river divides Ohio and Kentucky. Newport on the Kentucky side was beautiful with walkways and galleria with shops and cinema. View from the pedestrian purple bridge was pleasing.

The 5 hour drive from Cincinnati to Pigeon Forge, TN was very pleasant, except the last few miles where the traffic was bumper to bumper for the last 45 minutes. 3 lanes leading up to the mountain resort town of Gatlinburg was full of automobiles of every kind known to man. But it was worth the drive and the troubles.

Great Smoky Mountains National Forest was formed from land donated by North Carolina and Tennessee. Smoky Mountains has so much to do and see, 3 days were not enough at all. One can drive, hike, cycle, swim, tube, fly to enjoy the breathtaking views and vistas of the mountain range.

The drive to Clingmans Dome was uneventful, but the winding and narrow roads to Cades Cove and Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail were a bit scary. I think I may have to change the brake shoes of my car sooner than expected.

When it comes to food, you would all agree with me. US has more variety, less expensive, tastier and bigger portions.

We always end our trip with a visit to a relative or friend’s home so that we can detoxify our system with home made South Indian delicacies. This trip is no exception.

After a long, long time met couple of my Thiagarajar College of Engineering friends, had dinner with Rajasekar and Mahesh, relived “Madurai Moments”.

One of the main goals of this trip was to get my wife away from the kitchen and bring out the best in her. I think the mission has been accomplished, See her smile and dance in the Smoky Mountain rain >>>
